Abstract

Although Saipem fulfilled HSE obligations through structured and effective management systems, training and awareness for personnel and continuous efforts to find innovative solutions that position safety at the forefront of its operations, the management recognized a plateau in terms of safety performances, a weak management commitment and a poor culture of care in the organization. In 2007 the top management gave mandate to the HSE Department to start a transformation process to build a positive and lasting safety culture through leadership development, which is recognized as a key element of influencing behaviour. After a year of Research and Development, Saipem launched a worldwide cultural change programme called Leadership in Health & Safety (LiHS) specifically created to significantly increase the quantity and quality of safety leadership throughout the organisation. Saipem firmly believes that safety leaders are the critical link between a reactive culture and the development of a mature and proactive organisational safety culture.
