Conference programmeTopic LeadersSpeakersPostersScience & ResearchUsing wind for hydrogen and power-to-gas
Sector coupling / wind supporting the transition in other sectors
When: Thursday, 30 November 2017, 15:45 - 17:00
Where: G107
Session description
How to facilitate system integration of wind by supporting power-to-gas and power-to-hydrogen applications Converting renewable electricity to other energy carriers offers an immense opportunity to decarbonise the economy beyond the power sector. From transport to heating and industrial applications. The petro-chemical industry use large amounts of hydrogen that are produced today through CO2-intensive processes. Renewable CO2-free Hydrogen might replace it. It could be also used for all types of transportation modes in combination with high-efficient fuel cells. This offers large opportunities to increase wind power demand while tackling integration challenges, if power-to-gas is done in a grid-friendly manner. What about the economics? And the infrastructure limitations? How much hydrogen could the gas grid absorb? Shouldn’t it be better to synthetize Hydrogen and CO2 to obtain synthetic methane? At which cost?
Learning objectives
- Understand the economics of power to hydrogen and power to gas
- Discuss the potential first business opportunities, moving from demonstration to real commercial projects
- Learn about the potential benefits for wind integration in an ever increasing congested grid
