Central and Eastern Europe: can they rise from the ashes?

Market Developments

When: Thursday, 30 November 2017, 14:00 - 15:15
Where: G103

Session description

Once seen as the new renewable energy frontier in Europe, Central and Eastern European countries (Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia) today score as high risk investment destinations. Due to the retroactive changes the majority of these countries enacted on established renewable energy policies since 2014. And due to the high reliance on conventional power generation, poor interconnection to neighboring EU markets and unstable political regimes which push investors away.

Yet, the wind energy potential in these markets is undeniably high. And under the new European renewable energy regulatory framework for 2030 – the Clean Energy Package, Central and Eastern European countries will have to contribute a fair share to the collective EU renewables target of 2030. This session will look into the existing bottlenecks for wind investments and the silver linings for wind deployment by the end of this decade and beyond.
