Pioneering Grid Integration, Electrification & Power-to-X: Innovation and technology advancements in Krieger’s Flak and Gasum

Torsha Nag, Sustainability Portfolio Solution Consulting Leader, Northern Europe Hub, ABB

Abstract

As Europe accelerates the energy transition, system operators face compounded challenges in grid stability, cross‑border integration, and efficient market participation. Offshore wind amplifies these pressures, requiring robust infrastructure and intelligent control to manage variability, maintain reliability, and capture value across national boundaries. This contribution presents ABB’s role in the Krieger’s Flak hybrid offshore grid interconnecting Denmark and Germany, and a multi‑market optimisation deployment with Gasum in Finland. Being the world’s first and ONLY reference, in Krieger’s Flak, coordinated control across high‑voltage AC (HVAC) and high‑voltage DC (HVDC) assets enables synchronised, controllable exchange between distinct synchronous areas. Real‑time controllers dispatch active‑power and voltage setpoints every 5 seconds, coupled with rolling 72‑hour forecasts, to minimise curtailment and operational risk while supporting real‑time and forecast‑based trading. Complementing this, ABB's OPTIMAX platform supports virtual power plant operations, co‑location strategies, and portfolio‑wide optimisation, including day‑ahead and intraday scheduling, automated re‑scheduling, and wind forecasting for trading and system modelling. The ABB–Gasum collaboration extends these capabilities to ancillary and reserve services through production forecasting, flexibility indication, and secure grid‑data exchange. The architecture emphasises grid‑code compliance, grid‑forming capability, and scalable deployment with integrated trade and risk management.   Together, the case studies show how hybrid offshore grids and market‑aligned optimisation can decarbonise operations, strengthen resilience, and enable transnational energy exchange.
