Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO520: IEC-lightning parameters monitoring by retrofitting advanced monitoring system in wind turbines

Nicolas Quiévy, Senior Wind Technology Manager, ENGIE

Abstract

Lightning strikes constitute a significant threat to the integrity of rotor blades. Wind turbines are getting bigger, and these tall structures are more susceptible to attract lightning [1,2]. A lightning monitoring system from DEHN was installed by ENGIE Laborelec in three wind farms in Italy. The primary objective was to assess the capabilities of the system to measure all IEC-defined lightning parameters [3] and “longer duration” low currents during events. These parameters, driving the design of the turbine lightning protection system, are usually not registered during the operational lifetime of the asset, requiring retrofits [4]. This can bring uncertainty on the cause lightning damages observed on blades [5]. Another objective was to evaluate the robustness of the system for potential wider deployment in the fleet. The system is operating for more than 2 years and hundreds of events were captured and will be discussed.
