PO514: Component Analysis under Deficient Operating Conditions: A Practical Approach for Wind Asset Management

Pablo Osua, Senior Stress Engineer, Nabla Wind Hub

Abstract

This study addresses the impact of suboptimal lubrication practices on the main bearings of wind turbines. During routine borescope inspections and grease analysis at a wind farm, it became evident that the lubricant injected into the bearings was insufficient. This led to two fundamental concerns: first, the need to increase lubrication amount or frequency; second, the likelihood that suboptimal past operations have already impacted bearing lifespan. We developed a sensitivity analysis methodology to estimate the remaining operational life of bearings under actual lubrication conditions, supporting proactive decision-making around inventory of spare parts and budget planning. Comparative scenarios were created representing well-lubricated, medium-lubricated, and poorly-lubricated bearings. The methodology generated actionable outputs and is scalable to additional scenarios as needed. This work presents a practical approach to assessing component health under deficient operating conditions, with implications for improving asset management in wind energy operations.
