We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO498: Carbon brush solutions to improve generator performance under different climatic conditions

German Aguado Rubio, Head of Customer Service Management, SGL Gelter S.A.

Abstract

Wind turbine generators do not always have the location-optimized carbon brush models installed when set into operation. This is, among others, due to standardizations of parts by the turbine OEMs.   Under different and even extreme climatic conditions, like low and high temperatures, low and high absolute humidities (and the possible combinations and variations during the year) the standard brush-slip ring system might not perform optimally. Problems like excessive wear, overheating’s, or slip ring damages could be the consequence.    The presentation is a study of the carbon brushes performance used in Wind Energy Generators depending on different weather conditions, and how to solve this topic.   It contains:   1. Performance evaluation of carbon brushes for low, medium, and high absolute humidity conditions and temperatures. 2. Worldwide climate classification depending on different humidity levels and how to determinate the best carbon brush in each case, including a worldwide map with the results, based in data from more than 1.000 weather stations around the world. 3. Possible failures in generators due to climate conditions and how to find solutions using the most appropriate carbon brush model.
