We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
PO491: A new solution to address port bottlenecks
Gry Rostrup, Commercial Head of Europe, Maersk Offshore Wind
Abstract
The expansion of offshore wind in Europe is increasingly constrained by limited port capacity and infrastructure. This presentation introduces a new, bespoke feeder solution developed by Maersk Offshore Wind to overcome these bottlenecks and enable the industry’s continued growth. By decoupling installation from transport and leveraging a fleet of articulated tugs and barges (ATBs) as “feeder” vessels, turbine components can be efficiently ferried out from a broader range of ports—including smaller and shallower sites previously inaccessible to conventional wind installation vessels (WIVs). The WIV remains permanently stationed offshore, receiving components via a patented docking process that ensures safe and stable transfers. Drawing on a Europe-wide port study from Aegir Insights, as well Maersk Offshore Wind’s own simulations, and specific case studies with partners including Odense Port in Denmark and Port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, we will demonstrate how this innovative approach can accelerate installation timelines, unlock unused port capacity, and optimise existing infrastructure without requiring significant and costly port upgrades. The session will also offer a practical insights across the value chain, from questions of storage space and accessibility for OEMs, to port logistics and marshalling requirements, such as cranes and quayside strength. Adopting a feeder solution effectively requires cross-industry conversation. With these insights, we can open the discussion for developers, port authorities and policymakers seeking to future-proof their operations and meet the ambitious targets for offshore wind deployment.
