Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
PO490: Enabling floating offshore wind through port-centric flexibility and innovation: The MDL approach
Derek Lynch, Market Development Manager - Renewables, Maritime Developments Ltd (MDL)
Abstract
Maritime Developments Limited (MDL) is addressing the complexities facing ports in the floating offshore wind sector, particularly as the UK pursues an ambitious goal of 5GW capacity by 2030. Ports are under pressure from infrastructure constraints, space limitations, logistical inefficiencies, and exposure to weather-related risks, all of which challenge the rapid deployment of floating offshore wind projects. MDL views these hurdles as opportunities for innovation and has responded with the Energy Service Base (ESB)—a facility designed to act as an integrated hub for offshore energy operations. The ESB offers storage, maintenance, mobilisation, and decommissioning of flexible products such as cables and mooring lines, all supported by advanced logistical and engineering capabilities. By offering direct quayside access, just-in-time logistics, and comprehensive consultancy, MDL’s ESB model streamlines project execution, minimises vessel downtime, and ensures readiness for deployment. This approach enables responsive, scalable solutions for urgent repairs, long-term management, and full campaign mobilisation, providing the flexibility and reliability required to meet the accelerating demands of floating offshore wind development.
