PO455: Unlocking offshore wind through new platform technology

Abstract
This presentation will argue that, only through a new generation of floating offshore platform technology, can we truly unlock the enormous potential of offshore wind. The global wind energy industry is embracing larger turbines, exceeding 15 MW, to improve project economics and increase energy production. While offshore wind has proven its value, fixed-bottom foundations are reaching their limits in deeper waters, which are home to the most powerful wind resources. This has led the industry to turn to floating platforms. However, traditional floating designs face new challenges in supporting these mega-turbines. This presentation will discuss how new floating platform technologies are emerging to unlock the enormous potential of our offshore wind resources, especially countries in Europe. These new generations of offshore floating platform technology aim to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) by reducing capex and enabling easier assembly, which is crucial for scaling the sector and unlocking deep-water sites globally.
