PO451: Design readiness for extreme ice conditions: a contractor perspective on concrete gravity‑based foundations for offshore wind
Kim Grimsrud, Senior Manager, Aker Solutions
Abstract
Offshore wind development in ice-affected regions such as the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Bothnia requires foundations that can withstand level and ridged ice loads without compromising cost or fabrication schedule. Technology basis from research, field-tested ice load analysis, experience from previous Arctic projects and design standards must be combined with knowledge of efficient serial production when designing the wind turbine generator (WTG) foundations. This paper will present the learnings from as-built projects and discuss readiness level of design for cyclic and extreme ice conditions from a contractor perspective with focus on * Status of ice load and the differences of implementing an ice-cone or not. * Effect of GBS design/fabrication This article demonstrates a high readiness level for delivery of reliable ice load assessments based on an integrated design and fabrication model, from a contractor perspective. We assess the status of ice load considerations, including the impact of implementing a steel ice-cone versus a cone-free, geometry-optimized concrete solution. The effect of GBS design and fabrication methods is evaluated, with a focus on serial slip-form construction. Drawing on Aker Solutions extensive experience - including participation in multiple Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) related to ice loads and design for extreme conditions—we demonstrate an integrated design and fabrication model for early-phase studies. This model combines ice assessment, compliance with ISO 19906 and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards, analytical reviews, with slip-form construction expertise to deliver traceable design solutions for cost-effective, low-maintenance GBS foundations in icy offshore wind environments.
