Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO444: Quantifying the displacement of floating offshore wind given deep-water fixed-bottom technology.

Jordan May, Senior Analyst, TGS | 4C Offshore

Abstract

To date, analyses of global wind resource has assumed that waters deeper than 60 metres are best suited to floating wind. With new deep-water fixed-bottom technology reaching as high as TRL 6, an evaluation of the demand for deep-water and floating offshore wind technologies in an evolving landscape is needed.  The presentation will focus on novel deep-water solutions and the consequences of a shift from 60m to 120m as the new maximum depth for deep-water fixed foundations on the deployment of and resulting learning losses for floating wind.   The analysis suggests a shift in the role of floating, with it moving away from the technology with a global dominance on future wind resource, into a part of the offshore wind ecosystem. Additionally, the analysis shows a large role for hybrid technologies, which have been shown in previous analyses to be cheaper than floating up to their current theoretical limit of 120m. In theory, given the reduced cost, this suggests a higher long-term deployment of offshore wind.
