Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO401: A simple time series method for the site-specific assessment of directional turbulence intensity at offshore sites

Jorge Garza, Senior Specialist, C2Wind

Abstract

Directional variations in design turbulence intensity (freestream and wake-added turbulence) affect support structure loads and thereby design lifetime estimates. When performing Site Conditions Assessments, it is therefore necessary to characterise turbulence conditions directionally. This task is made difficult due to the general lack of site-specific cup or sonic anemometer measurements. A common alternative is to assume omnidirectional and/or generic turbulence intensity descriptions, however this approach fails to accurately describe site-specific, often directionally-dependent, wind climate features. In this work we present a methodology for providing accurate directional freestream TI assessments which does not require measurements at the site. The approach relies on using a simple analytical model already presented and validated at multiple locations, combined with wind speed- and atmospheric stability-dependent turbulence intensity characteristics measured at other sites. The methodology is validated at several offshore met masts against the actual measured directional turbulence, as well as simpler approaches typically used in the industry.
