PO397: Floating HVAC and HVDC substations for deep-water wind applications

Lennart Buitendijk, Manager Naval Architecture, Iv

Abstract

Floating wind energy is expected to play a major role in the expansion of offshore wind capacity, particularly in deeper waters where bottom-founded structures become uneconomical. Reliable transmission systems are therefore critical to connect future deep-water wind farms to the onshore grid. Iv and Nevesbu have combined expertise in offshore engineering, naval architecture, steel structures and hydrodynamics to develop floating substation concepts for both HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) and HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) applications. The work presented addresses key technical challenges in floating substations: platform motion, cable dynamics and lifetime, and system reliability in harsh offshore environments. Concepts have been developed and evaluated for semi-submersible HVAC platforms with a capacity up to 1 GW and floating HVDC platforms with a capacity up to 2 GW. Model testing has been performed to validate motion behaviour and the patented cable guide system for export cables under extreme wave conditions. By integrating structural, electrical and mooring design, the proposed solutions aim to provide reliable grid connection for large-scale floating wind farms, with applicability to different mooring configurations such as Tension Leg Platform (TLP) and catenary systems.
