PO347: Offshore Wind and Commercial Fishing - The role of AIS derived data as a tool to minimise risks to projects

Sara Xoubanova, Country Director (Spain) and Global Advisory Services Lead, Brown & May Marine Spain

Abstract

We explore the crucial role that AIS data may play to minimise risks to offshore wind farm projects in relation to commercial fisheries issues. The undertaking of detailed analysis of AIS derived data from early stages of project development  can be critical for many projects in ensuring that the co-existence strategies developed are fit for purpose and supported by fisheries stakeholders. It also helps identifying and assessing potential interactions as they arise and can aid debunking widespread myths of the impact of offshore wind on commercial fishing, often shared amongst fisheries stakeholders, regulators and the general public. From our experience providing fisheries technical advisory and liaison services for over 100 offshore wind farm projects internationally, we present case studies on how detailed AIS analysis can help minimise risks to projects across all project phases. We identify key advantages of early detailed AIS analysis and provide examples of how AIS data can be used to de-risk projects.
