We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
PO338: Options for biodiverdsity enhancement in offshore wind farms - Inspire a learning by doing approach
Marjolein Kelder, Senior Project Manager The Rich North Sea Program, Natuur & Milieu
Abstract
Understanding that offshore wind and ecology must go hand in hand in the face of the climate and biodiversity crisis, we need to seize the unique opportunity offered by offshore wind farms to enhance nature underwater. By planning offshore renewable energy deployment in synergy and collaboration with nature from an early stage, across borders, with a long-term horizon, will enable a transition to green energy hand in hand with a good environmental status and higher biodiversity. The Rich North Sea program’s mission is to create resilient marine life through nature inclusive designs and nature enhancement in- and outside offshore windfarms and making this the new standard in the deployment of offshore wind farms. The Rich North Sea shows that underwater nature enhancement is possible during the rapid energy transition. The challenge is to apply this cost efficiently and on a large scale. The lessons learned during our pilot project phase from 2018 up until and including 2025 are not restricted to the Dutch part of the North Sea. Our lessons have value for international parties as well, removing the need to reinvent the wheel and ultimately speeding up and increasing the scale of nature enhancement underwater both inside and outside offshore wind farms. In 2026, The Rich North Sea aims to initiate an international collaboration, nature enhancement project– involving local environmental NGOs and industry partners. We are aiming at a European based project in the the Greater North Sea Basin. During Wind Europe 2026 in Madrid, we aim to launch the initiative, share our ideas and plans and find (additional) partners for our project.
