PO328: Circularity by Design – Embedding Sustainability from the First Conversation

Lisa Heinen, project manager CSRD, KenzFigee

Abstract

The offshore wind sector is scaling rapidly, but growth must not come at the expense of material waste, emissions, and unsustainable design choices. Circularity cannot remain an end-of-life consideration—it must become a guiding principle from the very first project discussion. At KenzFigee, we are pioneering a “Circularity by Design” approach for offshore substation platform cranes and T&I equipment, as part of our active membership in the ReQuip Foundation, a non-profit initiative uniting 25 companies and 8 organizations across the offshore energy value chain. What makes this initiative unique is the full value-chain collaboration: engineers, purchasers, project managers, developers, and suppliers co-design solutions, sharing expertise while respecting commercial sensitivities. Many companies want to innovate in sustainability but fear losing competitive advantage; by collaborating openly through the foundation, multiple specializations can work together safely, fostering new partnerships and accelerating sector-wide progress. Central to our approach is the development of a design-phase checklist tailored to offshore crane builds. The checklist identifies key decision points where design choices have the highest lifecycle impact, including modularity, disassembly, material transparency, and adaptability for reuse. It is not presented as a finished tool, but as a framework for co-creation across the industry. By embedding circularity in the DNA of offshore equipment and leveraging the collective expertise of the ReQuip Foundation, the sector can move from ad hoc refurbishment strategies to proactive, design-driven sustainability. The ambition is clear: to create equipment that is modular, material-conscious, and resilient—setting new benchmarks for engineering excellence while preparing the value chain for regulatory, market, and environmental expectations.
