PO309: 5 MW Wind Turbine Modelling based on low-complexity Neural Networks
Jesus Enrique Sierra-Garcia, Proffesor, University of Burgos
Abstract
Wind turbine modelling is a complex task due to the rotation of the spinning rotor, the aerodynamic of the blades, and the fluid viscosity (Otter et al., 2022). They are normally studied using advanced flow dynamics, aerodynamics and hydrodynamics (offshore), and blade element theory. There are sophisticated wind turbine modelling software platforms such as OpenFAST that consider all these complex phenomena (Xu et al., 2022). However, the complexity of these models makes it impossible to integrate them into program logic controllers. Neural networks can be powerful tools to help us to simplify these complex models and include them into the wind turbine controllers. In this work recurrent neural networks have been successfully used to obtain low-complexity control-oriented computational models of a wind turbine. These models will enable the implementation of smart control strategies in industrial PLCs, increased energy capture to achieve better return on investment over the turbine's lifecycle.
