Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO217: LeOPARDS: Leveraging Ocean Power Assessments for Research, Development, & Sustainability

Jamie Mathews, Research Project Manager, Techworks Marine

Abstract

Ireland has ambitious plans for marine renewable energy, yet it is projected to fall short of its 2030 targets by a significant margin. A critical barrier is the scarcity and inconsistency of wave data, which is currently collected using different buoy platforms and mooring configurations. These differences directly affect the reliability of sea-state information, creating uncertainty for Designated Maritime Area Plans (DMAPs) and increasing investment risk for offshore renewable energy projects. The LeOPARDS project, led by TechWorks Marine in collaboration with the Marine Institute, addresses this gap by combining more than 20 years of wave measurements with large volumes of open-access data. These datasets will feed into an enhanced WaveWatch III (WW3) model, expanded to cover 30 years, providing a unique decision-support tool for Ireland’s offshore renewable energy sector. The project will benchmark wave conditions in Irish waters, conduct intercomparisons of different measurement platforms, and validate a 30-year hindcast using new buoy deployments. The outputs will include long-term statistics on wave spectra and validated baseline conditions at DMAP sites. Beyond Ireland, the project will establish best practices for buoy and mooring configuration choices in metocean campaigns, supporting renewable developers, enabling greater confidence in site selection and contributing to the transition towards a clean, secure, and sustainable energy future.
