Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO213: Results of a wind farm wide control strategy and a wake steering test on a commercial wind farm

Aleix Torner, Senior Manager - Technical Projects, RES Group

Abstract

Wind farm wide control strategies like wake steering or induction control have been discussed at length within the wind industry but very few information has been made public about trials and deployments on commercial wind farms. On this presentation RES will be sharing the results from an onshore wind farm wide test where wind farm control strategies were tested and validated. In particular, this included the implementation of wake steering along with collective yaw control through the RES designed and developed Dynamic Yaw product, consisting of the retrofitting of a dedicated wind farm controller that allowed to send regular commands to all the turbines in parallel in order to apply the required setpoints.  Additional measurement equipment (ground and nacelle baser lidars) was deployed to support the testing and validation phases, by, for example, measuring the impact of a steered turbine and it’s modified wake onto downwind turbines. Using these innovative control strategies, the wind farm, composed of more than 20 onshore wind turbines, achieved a statistically relevant AEP (Annual Energy Production) uplift of around a 1% alongside potential additional loading and operational benefits. During the presentation RES will share the methods, challenges, results and learnings the project had to go through to achieve such a successful outcome and a reflection on the future of wind farm active control strategies.
