PO207: AEROSUB: enabling scalable, unmanned operations & maintenance for floating offshore wind farms
Miguel Brito, Project Manager & R&D Engineer, EDP
Abstract
Renewable energy continues to be a success story around the world, with 585 GW of added renewables added to the mix in 2024, of which the wind industry contributed with a record 117 GW of new capacity globally in 2024; despite policy instability in the sector, the Global Wind Energy Council forecasts close to 1 TW of additional wind energy installations by 2030. A major part in wind energy installations will be played by the offshore wind sector, which added 8 GW in 2024, reaching a global capacity of 79 GW; it is expected to reach 200 GW by 2030, contributing 20% of the total added capacity. Operations & Maintenance (O&M) activities have a major influence on the final cost of wind energy installations, particularly in offshore wind, where these costs can contribute around 25% of the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE). Automating O&M tasks through robotization can have a major contribution to reducing LCOE, while improving safety and reliability. AEROSUB will design and demonstrate unmanned robotic solutions geared towards life preservation and sustainable O&M of offshore wind energy assets that will combine multiple robotic platforms, integrated with AI-based functions for enabling Beyond the Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS) operations. The AEROSUB project is pioneering a fully unmanned, AI-integrated robotic ecosystem for O&M of offshore wind farms, with a particular focus on floating platforms. By orchestrating aerial, surface, and underwater robotic platforms, AEROSUB aims to transform traditional O&M practices into autonomous, data-driven operations. Demonstrations will be conducted at two sites: the ATLANTIS Coastal Testbed for pre-validation and the WindFloat Atlantic offshore wind farm for full-scale deployment. These pilots validate the technologies in real-world conditions and showcase their potential to cut downtime by 60%, reduce the risk exposure of workers by 90% and lower LCOE by 2.5%.
