PO203: From life extension to repowering: Wind farm late life strategy development
Jens Bredal, Chief Specialist, Operation & Asset Management, CREADIS
Abstract
As global wind turbine fleets age, conventional late-life management approaches face limitations in balancing cost, performance, and regulatory demands. This study introduces an innovative, data-driven framework for optimizing late-life strategies—encompassing condition-based life extension, partial, and full repowering—tailored dynamically to site-specific technical and permitting constraints. By integrating operational data from the target asset with benchmarking datasets and advanced engineering models, the framework enables a sequential, prioritized assessment of critical parameters. This approach accelerates the exclusion of non-viable options, focusing resources on high-impact solutions that maximize lifecycle value. Importantly, the methodology incorporates a strategic mapping of refurbishment and repowering options against real-world permitting landscapes, a novel step enhancing practical applicability. Results underscore the necessity of early, flexible strategy development beginning at project inception, continuously refined as site conditions evolve. The site-specific nature of the framework ensures bespoke, optimized decision pathways, differentiating it from traditional one-size-fits-all methods. This presentation will delve into the operationalization of this innovative framework, showcasing case studies and practical insights that empower asset owners to future-proof their portfolios through targeted, agile late-life strategies.
