Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO174: Europe’s First Wind Farm at End-of-Life: The Future of Kythnos

Konstantinos Gkarakis, Energy engineer, MSc, MA, MBA, PhDc, APARKTION PC

Abstract

Kythnos Wind Farm, launched in 1982, holds the distinction of being Greece’s first commercial wind project and the first wind farm in Europe, featuring five 20 Kw (and after 33kW) turbines on the island of Kythnos. It supplied clean energy to the island system until 2000, symbolizing Europe’s early push toward renewable energy. As the farm approaches its 44th year in 2026, its intended lifespan has clearly ended—but the next steps remain uncertain. Should it be dismantled, upgraded with modern technology, or preserved in part as a landmark of Europe’s clean energy evolution? This paper positions Kythnos as a powerful case study for the evolving European wind sector. It examines the farm’s operational history, challenges tied to aging equipment, and various end-of-life options. Importantly, it expands the conversation beyond technical and economic concerns by spotlighting cultural and societal significance. These pioneering wind farms are not just economic assets—they are stories of bold innovation and the start of a clean energy movement. Placing Kythnos within the wider context of Europe’s decarbonization goals, energy security priorities, and heritage practices, the study argues for a multifaceted approach to end-of-life strategies. Decisions made here could inspire a new model—where upgrading and preservation work side-by-side, generating clean power while keeping the legacy of Europe’s wind revolution alive.
