Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO112: Repeatability, reproducibility, and uncertainty estimation of a new lidar turbulence algorithm in varying wind conditions around the world

Andrew Black, Research & Applications Engineer, Vaisala

Abstract

Today, turbine suitability and load validation are carried out using cup anemometers. There is a broad industry and academic effort to develop lidar algorithms to replace anemometry and simplify the measurement campaigns necessary for wind energy development. Lidar systems are already widely accepted for measuring wind speed and wind shear. If their ability to measure turbulence intensity can be validated, lidar could carry out all aspects of wind resource assessment.  This study examines the capabilities of a new lidar turbulence algorithm using inputs from a variety of stakeholders: a developer, an independent engineering firm, a lidar manufacturer, and a turbine OEM. The study examines three key questions: (1) what are the key performance indicators (KPIs) that lidar should meet in order to replace cup anemometers? (2) How repeatable is the new algorithm at the same site, following the KPIs? (3) How reproduceable is the performance at different sites? The intent of this presentation is to deeply scrutinize the new algorithm's behavior with input from key participants in wind development, and to share those results with the broader industry.
