Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO107: Impact of blockage models and modelling approaches on time series energy yield modelling predictions

Ben Simmonds, Senior Energy Analyst, Natural Power

Abstract

The wind farm Global Blockage Effect (GBE) has increasingly attracted attention in the wind energy industry over the past decade. DNV highlighted the upstream wind speed reduction caused by wind farms and its significant impact on power output (Bleeg et al., 2018). DTU stressed the need to include downstream wind speed acceleration observed in RANS-AD simulations (Forsting, 2021). In the GloBE Project, RWE and The Carbon Trust concluded the “GBE is sensitive to thermal stratification; thus, representing boundary layer height and inversion is essential for accurate GBE magnitude” (OWA Globe Webinar, 2024). The opensource PyWake python library was used to test the impact of different blockage models and blockage modelling approaches on time series energy yield predictions as compared to data from a selection of onshore and offshore operational wind farms. Overall, the results of this work showed that for the specific blockage models, parameters and wind farms assessed, changing the blockage model is likely to have less impact on the energy yield predictions than other elements in the modelling chain.
