PO105: Enhancing Wake Predictions for Floating Wind Turbines with FAST.Farm and Data-Driven Methods

Gabriele Ronchetti, Master Student Floating Wind Farm Wakes, Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC)

Abstract

Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) are emerging as a cornerstone for scaling renewable energy globally, but their efficiency is constrained by complex wake interactions that can cause energy losses. This work addresses this challenge by developing and validating a hybrid modeling framework that combines the speed of low-fidelity engineering tools with the accuracy of middle-fidelity aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations. The goal is to deliver actionable insights into wake dynamics and platform-motion effects, enabling more reliable predictions of wind farm performance. Early simulations demonstrate that platform-induced motions significantly alter wake propagation, turbulence intensity, and downstream efficiency, effects that conventional engineering models fail to capture. By integrating data-driven models trained on validated simulation outputs, this work advances predictive engineering models that balance computational efficiency and accuracy. The outcomes provide the offshore wind industry with practical methodologies to optimize floating wind farm layouts, enhance performance forecasting, and reduce operational uncertainties, supporting the rapid deployment of GW-scale floating wind developments.
