PO088: Business-case assessment of a hybrid offshore wind-solar farm
Nurlia Dewi , Junior Energy Solution Analyst, DMEC
Abstract
Diminishing returns due to lower wind speeds and wind energy cannibalisation are a challenge for offshore wind farms (OWF) in the German North Sea, in particular in dense OWF clusters [1]. Integrating offshore solar PV in a wind farm can contribute to a higher and more stable power output due to resource complementarity [2]. In this study, we investigate the economic feasibility of offshore wind-solar farms. This depends on a number of factors, including the cost of offshore solar PV technology and revenues. In a first step, the cost of offshore solar PV per MW is estimated. Using this, a business case study is performed with DMEC’s multiORE model for a case study in an offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. The modelled farm has a capacity of 300MW wind and 100MW offshore solar PV. Our results show which combinations of solar electricity price and offshore solar PV capital expenditures (CAPEX) result in a positive business case. This study highlights that various factors affect the business case of a retrofitted offshore wind-solar PV farm. Apart from the solar CAPEX values and electricity prices, the remaining lifetime of the offshore wind-solar PV farm plays a decisive role. This highlights the importance of carefully evaluating the cost reduction potential but also risks of cost increase when designing hybrid offshore projects.
