We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO082: Site scoping for renewables for green hydrogen production in India

Glenn Van Ruskensvelde, Renewable Energy Consultant, 3E NV/SA

Abstract

The aspirational edemand for green hydrogen and its derivatives in Europe requires a clear framework to identify renewable energy sites that can support export-oriented production. This study applies a GIS-based methodology to map and rank optimal areas for large-scale wind and solar development. Each location is assessed on electricity generation potential, levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), land availability, slope, and infrastructure proximity, with an additional complementarity score for wind that captures the benefits of combining wind and solar to achieve stable, high-capacity utilisation of electrolysers. The approach was tested in India as part of a pre-feasibility study for a green methanol plant designed for the European market. Results showed that solar resources offered broad geographic suitability at lower costs, while high-value wind sites were more localised. The analysis highlighted western India as particularly favourable due to resource strength and land availability, demonstrating the effectiveness of the framework in directing large-scale renewable siting. Beyond this case, the methodology is widely transferable. It provides a structured basis for comparing sites across regions, including within Europe itself, where identifying the most complementary resource profiles is essential to lowering costs, securing supply chains, and meeting decarbonisation goals.
