Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

PO078: Semi-centralized offshore hydrogen production – a techno-economic study

Elin Steinsland, CEO, HydePoint

Abstract

The rising demand for sustainable energy is expected to give an increase in offshore wind generation. Traditionally, the generated power is exported to shore on high voltage power cables.  Several industry reports have concluded that it can be more cost efficient to convert the generated power to hydrogen by electrolysis of seawater and export the energy via pipeline to shore.   Focus on the best solution for the overall wind-to-hydrogen system will be important for offshore wind and offshore hydrogen to scale. This has been the motivation for HydePoint, Subsea7, and EnBW to collaborate across the value chain to develop an optimized solution for offshore wind to hydrogen production.   The goal is to maximize economies of scale while profiting from modularization and utilization of existing vessels and foundations from the offshore wind industry. This resulted in a semi-centralized configuration with multiple distributed units instead of a single large-scale platform, that benefits from a streamlined supply chain capable of delivering already today.  The presentation will outline the architectural principles, with a focus on the interface between offshore wind turbines and PEM electrolysis and demonstrate that the optimized solution is ready for construction, installation, and commissioning.
