PO063: Grid-forming control strategies for farms of weathervaning floating wind dual-turbine platforms

Hector del Pozo Gonzalez, Project Engineer, Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC)

Abstract

This study investigates the application of grid-forming (GFM) control strategies for a dual-turbine floating wind platform, specifically designed for weathervaning capabilities and inspired by the W2Power concept, shown in the figure. Few studies have addressed this type of platform, with most existing research focusing primarily on structural design aspects. The system is modeled using two Type-IV permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs), replicating the Siemens Gamesa SG 6.0-154. The core of this work is the development and evaluation of control strategies for grid forming in such configurations. Since the concept is dual-turbine, a single platform can achieve GFM operation, with one turbine serving as a grid-forming unit and the other operating in grid-following mode. We analyze the performance of this strategy on a single platform and then scale the analysis to a small wind farm comprising three and five platforms. This demonstrates its efficiency and scalability in enhancing overall grid integration under varying wind and load conditions.
