We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
PO054: Advancing knowledge on electromagnetic field impacts on flatfish combining in- and ex-situ technical and ecological research
Saskia Jaarsma, Head of Offshore Development, TenneT
Abstract
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are a combination of electric and magnetic fields, produced either naturally or through human activities. With the large-scale deployment of offshore renewable energy projects, both current and planned, the interest in understanding EMFs in the marine environment has grown as they may influence marine life. While power cables are typically buried in the seabed or protected with concrete mattresses, EMFs can still be detected in the surrounding environment. There are indications that flatfish are susceptible to (anthropogenic) EMF, which may cause behavioural changes as avoidance or result in a barrier working. Concerns on negative impacts have been voiced by fisheries organisation and NGOs due to the lack of research. To improve knowledge on this topic and support fact-based discussions among all sea users and stakeholders, 50Hertz, Europacable, EirGrid, the Renewables Grid Initiative and TenneT have joined forces to conduct and commission studies on EMFs in relation to commercially important flatfish species, specifically European flounder (Platichthys flesus).
