PO040: Modelling bioacoustic data to assess the effects of environmental and anthropogenic drivers on the presence and behaviour of cetaceans in an offshore wind farm development area

Abstract
The development of offshore wind farms raises concerns about potential impacts on marine biodiversity, particularly cetaceans, whose presence and behaviour can be influenced by both environmental and anthropogenic factors. This study investigates cetacean bioacoustic activity in the planned floating offshore wind farm area off southern Brittany (AO5) prior to construction. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) was conducted over a full year using six FPODs and three broadband recorders, resulting in the collection of approximately 250 TB of acoustic data. Detections were classified into harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and delphinids, with click rates used as indicators of presence and activity. Environmental variables including sea surface temperature (SST), current speed, salinity, phytoplankton biomass (proxy for prey availability), depth, and distance to shore were analysed. Anthropogenic noise was also investigated through variations in sound levels and AIS data. The findings provide critical baseline information on seasonal patterns of cetacean occurrence and behaviour, highlighting environmental drivers and possible short-term responses to human activities. This work supports future environmental impact assessments and mitigation measures to ensure sustainable development of offshore renewable energy while safeguarding marine ecosystems.
