We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
PO038: Species-specific anti-collision protection in high diversity and migratory flyway regions
Manuel Polo, Technical Director, Wildlife Department, INGENIEROS DACHARY Y CAMARA, S.L.
Abstract
Selectively shutting-down wind turbines to minimize collisions between turbine blades and specific species of avians is an important strategy to support wind power generation while minimizing impacts on avian wildlife. However, this becomes more complex in areas of high avian activity and diversity. Accurate differentiation between species is more challenging where many similar species are present; additionally, high volumes of bird activity create a struggle between the need to curtail turbines often to protect birds, and the need to minimize turbine downtime to maintain power generation. We examine this balance in the context of 5 different windfarms in France and Spain, located near high avian activity and migratory flyways, with more than 50 different species of birds observed at these sites in 2024 and 2025. All these windfarms implement IdentiFlight, a trainable AI-based technology used for Shut-Down-on-Demand (SDoD) of individual wind turbines if a protected species is detected near the turbine
