PO035: Inventarisation of Bat Mitigation Measures and Their Suitability for Offshore Wind in the Netherlands
Renzo Elias, Marine Ecologist, Arcadis
Abstract
In response to the growing expansion of offshore wind energy, this study addresses the challenge of mitigating bat fatalities associated with wind turbine operations. With all bat species protected under the Natura 2000 European Habitats Directive, understanding and minimizing potential impacts is crucial. This study identifies and evaluates various bat mitigation strategies, focusing on their suitability for offshore environments. A comprehensive methodological framework was developed, integrating literature reviews, expert consultations, and international best practices to assess mitigation measures such as spatial planning, curtailment, detection, deterrence, and turbine design adaptations. The findings highlight curtailment as a particularly promising approach, especially when combined with real-time detection technologies. However, challenges remain in adapting these technologies to the offshore context, where environmental conditions differ significantly from onshore settings. Recommendations for future research emphasize the need to bridge knowledge gaps regarding bat migration patterns and flight altitudes, thus enhancing the effectiveness of mitigation strategies. By aligning development with ecological priorities, the offshore wind sector can advance sustainably, ensuring minimal impacts on bat populations while pursuing renewable energy goals.
