PO003: Integration of vibration and oil monitoring for early fault detection in wind turbine gearboxes

Eneko Gorritxategi, Atten2

Abstract

Early fault detection in wind turbine gearbox systems remains a critical challenge for operators aiming to optimize asset lifetime and reduce maintenance costs. This work presents new field evidence on the correlation between vibration monitoring and real-time oil analysis as complementary condition monitoring techniques. Vibration data from the low-speed shaft bearing were continuously recorded to track alert-level thresholds, while in-line optical oil analysis provided information on particle concentration, morphology, and lubricant degradation. By combining both datasets, a clearer and earlier indication of fault initiation and progression was achieved compared to using either method alone. This integration enabled the scheduling of uptower maintenance in advance of catastrophic gearbox failure, reducing downtime, avoiding secondary damage, and generating significant cost savings. The study demonstrates how the fusion of multiple condition monitoring data sources supports the transition towards O&M 4.0 practices, enhancing reliability and decision-making across the wind industry.
