Biography

Dr Joe Burchell is the Managing Director and Co-Founder of CGEN Engineering Ltd, a University of Edinburgh spin-out developing modular generator systems for wind, tidal, hydro and wave energy. He completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, specialising in the design of direct-drive machines for offshore and marine renewables. For more than a decade, Joe has worked with university and industry partners to develop and prove the CGEN modular, lightweight generator technology that improves reliability and serviceability across renewable platforms. Now leading the commercialisation of this technology through CGEN Engineering, he and his team are focused on making renewable energy systems more maintainable, circular, and cost-effective; extending the life and value of clean-energy assets.
