We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
On 9 April at 17:15, we’ll also hold the main poster session and distinguish the 7 best posters of this year’s edition with our traditional Poster Awards Ceremony. Join us at the poster area to cheer and meet the laureates, and enjoy some drinks with all poster presenters!
We look forward to seeing you there!
PO080: Field investigation into mooring Load Reduction Device performance in hurricane conditions at an offshore test site
Tom Doyle, Technical Director, Dublin Offshore Technology
Abstract
Floating Offshore Wind (FOW) requires cost reduction in order to compete with fixed offshore wind and other traditional and renewable energy sources. One major cost contributor in FOW is the mooring system. Volume effects are expected to deliver significant savings for most cost drivers, but moorings are already produced at scale and at volume for the oil and gas sector, and innovation is required to address the specific challenges of FOW. A number of researchers have identified the potential to improve performance through delivering controlled platform compliance. Optimization of mooring response stiffness can deliver significant performance benefits to an FOW platform and deliver significant design load reduction when compared to baseline configurations. The efficacy of the LRD integrated in chain catenary moorings and within Inclined Taut Moorings (ITM) was previously demonstrated at 1:60 scale in wave tank testing for the full FOW system. This paper presents the results from a world-first offshore field investigation into the use of an LRD-integrated chain catenary mooring at the SmartBay test site in Galway Bay in Q4 2020. The LRD-integrated mooring system was subject to environmental loading from a representative Atlantic seastate for a period of 1200 hours, including during Hurricane Epsilon and Storm Aiden. A combination of 2 No. load shackles, 4 No. accelerometers and a wave rider buoy were used to monitor performance of the mooring system, enabling validation of the LRD stiffness response and the numerical models used in LRD-integrated mooring design.
