Posters

Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

On 9 April at 17:15, we’ll also hold the main poster session and distinguish the 7 best posters of this year’s edition with our traditional Poster Awards Ceremony. Join us at the poster area to cheer and meet the laureates, and enjoy some drinks with all poster presenters!

We look forward to seeing you there!

PO023: Powering the Future: A World-First Offshore Charging Breakthrough

Jochem Vermeir, R&D Manager, Parkwind

Abstract

Parkwind is a Flemish-based company that develops, finances (co-owns), and operates offshore wind farms. In just over 12 years, Parkwind has achieved significant success in the offshore wind energy sector, growing into a leading independent offshore wind developer with a strategic focus on innovation. A key driver of Parkwind's success is its innovation strategy, which integrates collaborative research, development, and entrepreneurship into a culture of empowered, no-nonsense operational excellence. This strategy places a strong emphasis on sustainability, with a specific commitment to minimizing greenhouse gas emissions from maintenance vessels and promoting sustainable operations. This abstract highlights a recent milestone achieved by Parkwind as part of this ongoing strategy in sustainability. In collaboration with MJR Power & Automation, Parkwind successfully completed a world-first trial for an offshore vessel charging station powered directly by locally sourced offshore wind electricity. This innovative system was installed on the substation of Nobelwind, one of Parkwind's operational offshore wind farms, which features 50 turbines and is located 47 km off the Belgian North Sea coast. The system is engineered to support Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) charging up to 2MW. Its design eliminates the need for moorings, seabed consents, and dynamic subsea cables, while keeping all sensitive equipment out of the splash zone. The automated connection and disconnection process allows vessels to securely connect to the charging station, weather vanning in shifting tidal currents while charging. The system demonstrated its effectiveness by safely transferring power to a CTV from the fully operational and actively producing wind farm. This successful trial not only marks a significant milestone for Parkwind but also sets a new precedent in the industry for sustainable marine operations, showcasing the potential of offshore wind energy to power maritime transport in real time.
