Session description
The offshore wind industry faces several challenges on the journey to decarbonisation, primarily arising from a lack of guidance or standards, and unclear actions or prioritisation. Recent developments have been made to incorporate more sustainable objectives, such as the inclusion of sustainability criteria, in particular conducting carbon footprint assessments, in the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA). However, without consistent guidance, efforts could become fragmented, leading to misinterpretation and slow progress. The NZIA outlines the need to harmonise the methods for assessing life cycle carbon footprints; the SUSJIP methodology provides a solution to do this. To increase the transparency of supply chain emissions, the Sustainability JIP has collaboratively developed a consistent approach to account for carbon impacts https://www.carbontrust.com/our-work-and-impact/guides-reports-and-tools/standardising-offshore-wind-carbon-footprinting). During this session, delegates will gain an insight into the role of lifecycle carbon footprint assessments in the OSW industry, including their use cases and the importance of a harmonised calculation methodology. The session will also explore the considerations needed when considering how and when to incorporate carbon footprint calculations into auction design.
