Biography

Alan has been working in the wind industry for 30 years. He is presently Head of Technical Services at RES Ltd, based in their Glasgow office. After graduating in aeronautical engineering from the University of Glasgow, he spent 11 years in the wind energy section of the UK National Engineering Laboratory, carrying our R&D on wind turbine performance and resource assessment. He has been with RES for 19 years focussing on providing and managing wind farm layout design and resource assessment services for many of RES' markets around the World, with a particular focus and interest in the challenging conditions of Sweden and Norway where the use of masts in combination with sodars and lidars has been key to the success of RES in those markets. He has also continued to be involved in wind turbine power performance testing and has spent the past 8 years as a member of the international team revising the IEC61400 12-1 performing the roles of coordinator for the revision of Annex G (Met Mast Mounting of Anemometers) and secretary to the team. He is now responsible for managing the future re-structuring of the IEC 61400 -12 series of standards into separate power performance and wind measurement standards.
