Session description
Under cold conditions wind turbines might build up ice on the blades, which will then fall off or be thrown away. This poses a safety risk to workers and members of the public, can damage surrounding structures (e.g. houses) but also to the turbine itself. As a result there can be permit operational restriction limitations, location limitations or additional technical costs. Much work is done to better manage the icing risk and some of the latest developments will be presented in this session.
Learning objectives
- Better understanding of the ice throw and fall risk including turbine and operating mode specific icing parameters
- Insight in the development of the future IEA Wind Task 19 standard on ice risk assessment
- New technology to reduce icing risk
