PO152: Wind Turbine Main Bearing Unit Case Study - Comparisonof the Power Density, Manufacturing Costs and CarbonFootprints of a cast and an AHD steel hollow forged rotorshaft

Abstract
The Paper presents a wind turbine (WT) main bearing unit (MBU) case study, comparing the power density, manufacturing costs and carbon footprints of a cast and air hardening ductile (AHD) steel hollow forged rotor shaft. Based on a 2.3 MW low wind speed WT, MBUs comprising cast/hollow forged rotor shafts, main bearings and bearing housings are predesigned for highest power density. Furthermore, the manufacturing costs and carbon footprints for each component are calculated using estimation formulas. Early results show, that the MBU with the hollow forged main shaft reaches higher power densities than the cast variant. Due to the larger surcharges for hollow forging, the material required is higher and therefore the manufacturing costs of the hollow forging variant is more expensive.
