We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
On 9 April at 17:15, we’ll also hold the main poster session and distinguish the 7 best posters of this year’s edition with our traditional Poster Awards Ceremony. Join us at the poster area to cheer and meet the laureates, and enjoy some drinks with all poster presenters!
We look forward to seeing you there!
PO069: Floating wind foundations: commodity or specialist product?
Joao Cruz, Principal Consultant, Arup
Abstract
While the 'rules of thumb' that apply to the decision-making process of where fixed vs. floating foundations should be installed remain a 'grey' area, it is clear that floating foundations provide a technically viable solution for the deepwater rollout of Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs). With a number of live pre-commercial projects (globally), the technology demonstration phase is rapidly ending, and both financial and project delivery demonstration are currently being actively tested. Recognising that offshore wind is an opportunity driven market, two high-level models can be conceptualised to embrace the rollout of floating foundations: one, more akin to the fixed foundation model, assumes that a foundation is somewhat of a 'commodity', with limited intrinsic intellectual property to explore, and where project-specific designs rely on adaptations of existing concepts; another, more akin to the current status quo in floating wind, assumes that a floating foundation stems from a number of propriety innovations, indissociable from the overall design process and that confer to a specific design competitive advantages. This presentation will aim to shed some light on this topic while stimulating discussion - based on recent foundation design experience on multiple flagship projects, and advisory work with key stakeholders of the offshore wind sector.
