Posters

Come meet the poster presenters to ask them questions and discuss their work

We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.

On 9 April at 17:15, we’ll also hold the main poster session and distinguish the 7 best posters of this year’s edition with our traditional Poster Awards Ceremony. Join us at the poster area to cheer and meet the laureates, and enjoy some drinks with all poster presenters!

We look forward to seeing you there!

PO052: Bird monitoring in DemoSATH LAB.

Ane Ugena, Master on Environmental Science, Saitec

Abstract

Saitec, together with Kepco and RWE, deployed its first full scale demonstrator project, DemoSATH, a 2 MW single Floating Offshore Wind (FOW) energy platform in the Cantabrian Sea at BiMEP (Armintza, Spain) in August 2023, becoming the first FOW prototype connected to the grid in Spain and a milestone in the development of FOW power in Spain. To obtain the most of the DemoSATH, Saitec and RWE work together on a specific program (DemoSATH Lab) to perform enhanced environmental monitoring studies on the effect of SATH technology on birds, underwater noise, and the presence of benthonic and fouling biodiversity. BiMEP is within the ES0000490 Marine Space of the Mundaka-Cape of Ogoño, being this a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), and according with the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), DemoSATH Lab is strongly focused on monitoring the impacts on birds, and particularly the five key species of SPA: Hydrobates pelagicus, Phalacrocorax aristotelis, Puffinus griseus, Puffinus mauretanicus and Morus bassanus. Among the activities carried out for assessing the potential impacts on birds are the fortnightly monitoring of marine bird species from the Atalaya watchtower since Octobre 2016, a tagging campaign of Hydrobates pelagicus in the summer 2023, both commissioned by BiMEP, and a bird detection and collision avoidance system implemented on the DemoSATH, which is presented here.
