We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
On 9 April at 17:15, we’ll also hold the main poster session and distinguish the 7 best posters of this year’s edition with our traditional Poster Awards Ceremony. Join us at the poster area to cheer and meet the laureates, and enjoy some drinks with all poster presenters!
We look forward to seeing you there!
PO033: How the electrification and decarbonisation of oil and gas production can be achieved through grid connected commercial scale floating offshore wind such Green Volt and Cenos floating offshore windfarms
Calum Watt, Grid Technical Authority, Flotation Energy
Abstract
The Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn JV is developing two innovative grid-connected floating offshore windfarms in the UKCS. The aim is to provide electrification to nearby oil and gas production facilities, enabling significant carbon reduction by retiring onsite diesel and gas generation As well as providing surplice power to the UK Grid. Whilst there are many technical and regulatory challenges these project provide a true platform for innovation, and are a stepping stone for the UK's Floating wind ambition. By delivering not only clear, reliable renewable electricity, they also present significant benefits of 'Power from Shore' for oil and gas facilities, as well as grid-connected commercial scale floating offshore wind using common offshore transmission systems. These pioneering projects will include offshore frequency conversion from 50Hz to 60Hz to supply offshore oil and gas facilities, ensuring a stable electricity supply that will facilitate emissions reduction efforts in line with the North Sea Transition Deal's goal to half emissions in the next few years. The projects, awarded under Crown Estate Scotland's Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round aim to provide low-carbon electricity to oil and gas platforms. Green Volt is a 560MW development that received onshore and offshore planning consent in 2024 in a record 14 months and secured a Contract for Difference (CfD) in the UK Government's Allocation Round 6. The project, operational in 2029, will be the first commercial scale floating offshore windfarm in Europe and one of the world's largests Cenos is a 1400MW development planned to be connected to an HVDC system, that will be combined with a potential a multi-purpose interconnector. The project is undergoing consenting and is also planning to decarbonise participating oil and gas platforms with clean electricity.
