We would like to invite you to come and see the posters at our upcoming conference. The posters will showcase a diverse range of research topics, and will give delegates an opportunity to engage with the authors and learn more about their work. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or simply curious about the latest developments in your field, we believe that the posters will offer something of interest to everyone. So please join us at the conference and take advantage of this opportunity to learn and engage with your peers in industry and the academic community.
On 9 April at 17:15, we’ll also hold the main poster session and distinguish the 7 best posters of this year’s edition with our traditional Poster Awards Ceremony. Join us at the poster area to cheer and meet the laureates, and enjoy some drinks with all poster presenters!
We look forward to seeing you there!
PO030: Offshore wind and Power-to-X: A Brazil case study
Andressa Medeiros Santiso, Researcher, Creation Research Group - UFRN
Abstract
The demographic growth and the pursuit of reducing emissions highlight the need for alternative resources to meet energy demand. In Brazil, renewable energy sources already account for 89% of the electricity mix but only 49% of the energy mix. The country has a significant offshore wind potential of 1.2 TW, which makes it essential to adopt strategies to use this amount of energy in previously untapped economic sectors. Power-to-X (PtX) technologies and products have been gaining attention due to their expansion in the use of renewable electricity as an input source for the production of various products. In this context, this research aims to analyze the opportunities and challenges of applying PtX products from offshore wind energy in Brazil. The research was conducted in three stages: theoretical research, case study, and data analysis and systematization. The main findings are: (i) Brazil has competitive costs for producing PtX products due to the high capacity factor of offshore wind projects; (ii) Potential PtX applications identified in Power-to-gas, Power-to-liquid, Power-to-chemicals, and Power-to-power; (iii) The use of green hydrogen for the production of green steel, adding value to iron ore; (iv) The potential for nitrogen fertilizer production via the green ammonia route, contributing to reducing import dependency; (v) The use of Power-to-Gas in road transport will face competition from already marketed products like ethanol and biodiesel; (vi) Energy storage in Power-to-power form through green hydrogen and its later use in transport via fuel cells is not yet economically viable. It is concluded that the expansion of these technologies is in its initial phase, but with strategic planning and infrastructure investments, Brazil could position itself as a key player in the production, use, and export of PtX products.
