PO130: Are we looking at climate change in the right way in the wind resource community?

Lars Landberg, Vice President, Group Leader, Renewables, Group Research and Development, DNV

Abstract

Dear reviewer, this is a bit of a strange abstract, but i hope you will consider it, as you can see, what we propose is quite interactive, we think it will work, using eg Slido. Are we looking at climate change in the right way in the renewables resource communities? This is the question we have set out to study in Group R&D in DNV. The outputs of one - or even a group of - climate models say very little about what will actually happen at a specific place at a given time, maybe even averaged over several years. Climate information for decision making must take as point of departure knowledge about the renewables sector decision contexts, not modelling results. There is, a lot of other information that can be captured and derived from these models when seen from a domain knowledge perspective; aspects like concrete risks, better understanding of uncertainties or of change and extremes could be candidates for that. The presentation will start by outlining these aspects in more detail and then it will very quickly invite the audience to discuss how domain knowledge of the wind sector can provide better insights into climate variability and change impacts.. To end the discussion we will try to capture the main findings, and use that to set the direction of our future and further investigations, with the goal of using climate change information in the best possible way.
