Abstract

Traditionally, SAR images have been used in R&D settings for offshore wind, mostly to validate individual flow cases. The velocity deficits behind operational offshore wind farms have formed the basis of several scientific case studies. The SAR wind speeds have been compared with model output from WRF (Weather Research & Forecasting Model), typically at 500x500m horizontal resolution. With the coming of age of highly accurate LES models, it is now possible to couple individual filtered SAR-derived wind speed fields to modelled wind fields over the same areas and time-frames at a 10x10 to 100x100m resolution. We will show that for specific use-cases in emerging wind markets the use of onshore wind measurements, in conjunction with high resolution LES-modelling & SAR images leads to accurate results. This helps to inform (more) intelligent wind farm planning in a preparatory stage and helps in aids in planning expensive (offshore floating LiDAR) measurement campaign strategies.
