PO085: Offshore wind resource measurements in the Dutch North Sea including observed wind farm wake effects beyond 20km

Catherine Eeckels, Project Manager, TNO

Abstract

The number of wind farms is increasing rapidly in the Dutch part of the North Sea as part of the energy transition. Prerequisites for the rollout of wind farms are site studies and having the required knowledge on the local wind climate and wave energy conditions. In the Netherlands, TNO Wind Energy has been providing multi-year measurement campaigns since 2014 in the North Sea. In this study TNO shows the developments of its most recent LiDAR measurement campaign on an offshore platform (L02-FA-1) north of the Wadden (Frysian Islands). With the increasing size of wind turbines (with tip heights beyond 250m), it's important to know the wind speed at higher altitudes. TNO therefore uses LiDAR measurement devices, which can measure to almost 300m altitude. This new measurement campaign, together with information retrieved from wind atlases like DOWA or others can be of great importance in identifying wind speed reductions by large scale wind farms for not only in the Netherlands but also in Germany, Denmark and the UK. In this study, first observations regarding these effects from the Borssele wind farm on offshore measurement platforms Europlatform and Lichteiland Goeree are presented.
