PO014: Development of a new degradation oil test method for gearbox oils using the color measurement
Yesid Antonio Gomez, OCM Diagnostician Manager, Bureau Veritas
Abstract
In order to optimize wind turbine maintenance cost as well as prevent catastrophic failures and improve long term reliability, oil condition monitoring is proven to be an efficient technique. A comprehensive review of the different current analytical techniques that help in the diagnosis of the in-use oils has been conducted in this study. During the research, challenges and opportunities have been identified to allow the development and implementation of new analytical methodologies. Among a large variety of parameters, industry studies in the field of diagnosis have shown that color can be used as a potential indicator of oil health, and in many cases, it is a reliable field indicator. However, there was a traditional conviction that color alone cannot be fully representative of the actual oil's condition. During the development of this study, in which more than 500 of wind turbine samples from different manufactures, models and operating conditions have been analyzed, the color test is statistically proven for first time to be a reliable but also cost efficient analytical technique to conclude about the condition of the lubricating oils in gearboxes, which allows to determine and optimize maintenance strategies and improve long term reliability
